Blackberry curve 9300 wont show up on my laptop?

when i connected my blackberry to my laptop it immediately asked for the software disc, when i put this in it didnt find anything so i just took it all out and started again, i ignored the prompt to insert disc and clicked the option that said open mass storage and am now able to transfer data to and from phone to laptop.
